Diamond Snow Globe

This project was presented as two hollow clear sapphire hemispheres, with a closed sapphire back. They were filled with mineral oil and diamonds. When placed back to back they made a sphere. A thumbnail sketch was provided to communicate the design. Because of the fragility of the globes the parts could not be set in any traditional manner. The solution was to make setting collars that were held together with a dovetail mechanism. After setting the bezels with diamond pave, the collars were set back to back and the dovetail blocks were slid into position. A threaded bezel was used to secure the settings and eliminate lateral movement allowing the sphere to spin. This mechanism could be disassembled in case of any damage or repair. The final piece was cast and finished in 750 white gold.
